How Our True North Values Help Seniors Find Purpose
What does it mean to be guided by goodness, loyalty, faith, and fun? For Amanda Randolph, Administrator at Maple Ridge Senior Living, it starts with understanding that people make all the difference.
“We talk about the Maple Ridge Senior Living family because that is what we are,” she says. “Our goal is always to create a warm, loving community that’s as unique as the people who live here. Every day is a chance to live vibrantly and find meaning and joy, whether you’re a resident, a family member or one of our care team members.”
Treating people well – understanding what makes them unique, learning their backgrounds, knowing their likes and dislikes – is just part of what we call our true north. “We are guided to do what is right, proper and good at all times,” says Amanda. “Those are the values on which Maple Ridge Senior Living is founded and what drives us each and every day.”
What does True North mean?
As a member of the Compass Senior Living group of communities, Maple Ridge Senior Living offers a variety of True North Programs that bring to life our mission of being guided by goodness, loyalty, faith, and fun. Each of our innovative programs provides purpose by relying on the power of family and community connections, growth opportunities, cognitive exercise and the healing power of multi-sensory stimulation.
#Gen2000 ProjectTM
Staying connected these days means using technology, but many seniors don’t know or don’t feel comfortable enough to take the Internet by storm. Our teen volunteer program closes the tech – and age – gap by partnering teen volunteers with seniors. Together, they learn from one another, forge relationships and make connections, while bringing generations closer than ever before.
Tiny StoriesTM
The Tiny StoriesTM Project is dedicated to preserving legacies by creating a digital record of our residents’ stories, history and advice. As residents tell their stories of life experiences and wisdom acquired along their life journeys, deeper connections are made and those on the receiving end are all the better for it. Our innovative and simple process for capturing, recording and transcribing small vignettes of life helps our residents feel and find their identity while creating a priceless gift for their families.
Circle of Friends
All human beings have the innate need and desire to belong, to be loved, to be included and to build their esteem. In Circle of Friends, residents and team members gather for a specific purpose, such as singing, discussion sharing food, community outreach and more. Through this connection, our residents form deep relationships, have meaningful conversations, listen with intent and learn new things about ourselves and others.
Brain Power Nutrition BoostTM
Recent studies show that, indeed, you are what you eat. Eating a brain-healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent cell damage by fighting free radicals in the brain. We believe that the Brain Power Nutrition BoostTM is beneficial to all of us. Our dining options contain a wide variety of brain-healthy food options, so your food isn’t just delicious, it’s helping you live well, too.
Music Makes MemoriesTM
Music has the power to unlock long-term memory, even in those whose memory has seemingly vanished. The Music Makes MemoriesTM is a signature program for our residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The part of our brains that recognizes music is one of the last parts of the brain to be affected from cognitive decline, and we’ve found that beloved music helps our residents make connections and feel enriched as the music transports them to a happier place. We provide headphones and an MP3 player downloading playlists individualized for each person.
Aromatherapy
Essential oils have been used for generations to ease symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. Now, caregivers are using these oils to help soothe anxiety, boost memory function and improve moods of loved ones living with cognitive issues. We’ve also seen how aromatherapy can help improve the quality of life for people living with chronic health conditions. We provide aromatherapy based on individual preferences, while also providing education and seminars in group settings about this innovative (yet ancient) therapy.
True North YogaTM
Compass Senior Living believes that elderhood is a time of learning, growth, and vibrancy, and our True North Yoga™ program supports this belief. Yoga has a significant number of health benefits such as reducing the risk of osteoporosis, reducing anxiety and depression, improving balance, keeping the mind sharp and improving your sense of well-being. It is also a wonderful social connection with others. In True North Yoga™, mats are replaced by chairs, which allows people of all levels and health challenges to take full advantage of yoga’s amazing health benefits.
